OSU Extension Service, Tillamook County & Latimer Quilt & Textile Center have collaborated to provide ongoing classes for Youth Members. The first in the series of classes for 4th grade and above will start on April 6th, 3:30 to 5:30 pm @ Latimer Quilt & Textile Center, 2105 Wilson River Loop, Tillamook.
This workshop will use different plastic bag mediums to create a functional bag with a zipper. Members will create their ‘fabric’, design their bag shape, sew the bag together and insert a zipper before they personalize the bag by adding embellishments.
This is the first in a series of workshops presented by the partnership with OSU Extension/4-H and Latimer Quilt and Textile Center. Classes will teach basic and expanding skills for youth 4th grade and above. A series of classes will be offered to include:
- Knitting : items made using round looms, straight looms and needles.
- Quilting: items made using applique, patchwork or paper-piecing methods.
- Weaving : items made using a weaving warp and weft fiber. Different flat and tabletop looms will be used.
- Functional Art: original work in any technique or media done to create functional but non-wearable items. Items made can be from new, recycled or refurbished materials.
Workshops will be held at Latimer Quilt & Textile Center, 2105 Wilson River Loop, Tillamook, Thursday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30 pm. Bus transportation from the Tillamook Schools to Latimer Quilt & Textile Center is available a parent/guardian needs to contact the school directly.

FUTURE WORKSHOP DATES:
Workshop II—Knitting, Thursday’s May 4, 11, 18 & 25 This workshop will use a round loom, hook and yarn to create a knitted item. Workshop III—Quilting, Thursday’s June 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 This workshop will use a variety of quilting methods to create a quilted item.
Workshop IV—Weaving, Thursday’s July 6, 13, 20 & 27 This workshop will use a flat or tabletop loom to create a woven item. The member will learn how to warp and weft the fiber during this workshop.
NOTE: Activities may change depending upon instructor availability. Registration per Workshop is $45 for enrolled 4-H Youth* and includes all the materials, equipment and supplies needed to make an item. A snack will be provided. Items made at these workshops will be eligible to be entered into the Fair as a 4-H Project. Sign up early, space is limited to 12 participants.
*Youth not currently enrolled in 4-H pay a one-time enrollment fee in addition to the workshop fee, payable at time of registration ($25 for 4-12th grade). Financial need scholarships are available.
