Two dozen brand new apartments will very soon be ready for occupancy at Bayside Commons in Nehalem, adding much needed affordable housing to Tillamook County. Leasing is currently in progress for those who qualify by earning 30% to 60% of the Area Median Income.
The developer, Daryn Murphy, offered a sneak peek of the nearly completed project on September 19 to a group of housing advocates including three Housing Commission members. Also present were architect James Fanjoy, builder Jason Stegner of Cove Built LLC with key members of his team, and Cascade Management CEO Dave Bachman. In a brief speech, Murphy explained that he started working on Bayside Commons in 2017 to serve the need for below-market rate housing in Tillamook County. Growing awareness of the housing affordability crisis eventually spurred policy action and legislation by county, state, and federal agencies to help make feasible the funding for projects like this. Bayside Commons also received support in 2022 from the Housing Commission’s Housing Production Solutions Fund. Another key to bringing the project to fruition with quality construction was working with a local builder, Cove Built, which is also constructing the new city hall and police station for the city of Manzanita.
The five-building complex, which architect Fanjoy said are energy efficient and designed for 100-year durability, includes six 1BD units (625 sq ft @$848 – $852), eleven 2BD units (850 sq ft @$1022 – $1133) and seven 3BD units (1,075 sq ft @$1182 – $1631). High ceilings, airy window placement, lots of storage closets, and washer-dryer nooks give the units a spacious feel. Those on the tour were impressed with the design and quality of the units at Bayside Commons. New residents are expected early October.
