By Jim Heffernan
Laura recommended this book to me and decided to give it a try. I was slow to warm to the book, but I grew to love it. I believe it is a book I will always keep close to me.
Since 2020, I’ve wanted to understand why I find myself so out-of-step with about half the country.
This book has provided me with answers I have never been able to articulate. The answers are that we lack the intellectual humility and critical thinking skills we need to talk to each other respectfully.
I feel this book could have been titled, “A Personal Pathway To Critical Thinking”.
This book points the way, but it’s not an easy path. It requires that we change and grow.
I particularly liked the way he explained how fallacies and biases get in the way of critical thinking. He catalogs them by type and explores them thoroughly.
This is a book that we need for our own mental health, a book we need for our community.
He opens his concluding chapter with a quote that should be taken to heart, “In every encounter we either give life or we drain it. There is no neutral exchange.” (Brennan Manning).
