(MANZANITA, OR, JANUARY 11, 2023) – February 2023 marks the 15th anniversary of the Emergency Volunteer Corps of Nehalem Bay (EVCNB). After the “Great Coastal Gale” in December 2007, the community realized how easily our area can be isolated by natural disasters. In February 2008, over 100 people gathered to talk about what could be done. A program from Washington State called Map Your Neighborhood was presented and the community took hold of the idea. Neighborhood teams began, becoming the foundation of EVCNB’s commitment to preparedness.
EVCNB has grown into a strong organization, primarily of volunteers, who work to “Promote a Culture of Preparedness”. EVCNB kicks off this year of celebration with a community gathering at the North Coast Recreational District (NCRD) on February 4th from 1-3pm. Dr. Jonathan Allan from the Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) will share the latest information on earthquake awareness and the Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems (NANOOS) Visualization System (NVS). Dr. Allan will demonstrate the NVS App that can help you plan the best evacuation routes. We’ll have celebratory give-aways and a raffle for a great prize.
The public is encouraged to attend. Suggested $5 donation. Masks requested but not required.
