UPDATE – Report from today October 8, 2024@ 5pm: In the field just south of town where Tillco Dems have had a large sign for years, we have had Harris and Andy Davis signs taken since we started putting them up, replacing them each time. There were 2 Harris, 1 Andy Davis, and 1 VOTE DEMOCRATIC signs when we drove into town at noon. We were coming home at 5 o’clock shocked that all 4 signs were taken in broad daylight!!!! So much for FREEDOM OF SPEECH and RESPECTING PRIVATE PROPERTY RIGHTS!!! Is this just going to get worse the closer we get to the election? We are saddened by this dark side of our community.
A person or persons has been systematically removing Harris-Walz candidate signs especially in south county. They have also been taking down signs for Andy Davis, the Democratic candidate for Oregon House District 32. These signs are placed on private property, rather than in the public right of way (which is illegal). In a field just south of Tillamook on US 101, a Harris-Walz sign was torched – potentially igniting a fire in the dry grass during a fire ban. Political speech, including signs, is protected by the First Amendment of the US Constitution. Removal of these signs only demonstrates that these folks do not believe in free speech or democracy. There is plenty of mean rhetoric out there in the media and on-line this election season….Can’t we be civil here in beautiful Tillamook County? Where is their sense of fair play?
PS If the perpetrators are identified, we will report them to the police for trespassing and destruction of private property.
