Rockaway Beach, OR – North Coast Communities for Watershed Protection (NCCWP) invites community members to an insightful evening discussing the economic implications of the climate crisis, with a special focus on the Oregon coast. The event, titled “The Climate Crisis & The Oregon Coast: An Economic Perspective,” will be held on Thursday, August 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Mary by the Sea, located at 275 S. Pacific St., Rockaway Beach.
Esteemed natural resource economist Ernie Niemi will lead the discussion, drawing on his extensive experience in economic-impact analysis to explore how climate change affects both our environment and economy. Mr. Niemi, a University of Oregon and Harvard alumnus, is the President of Natural Resource Economics, Inc., where he specializes in understanding the economic importance of natural resources.
During his presentation, Mr. Niemi will address the broad economic consequences of the climate crisis before diving into the specific economic benefits of maintaining healthy forest ecosystems. His talk will highlight the intricate connections between environmental stewardship and economic sustainability, emphasizing the vital role that Oregon’s forests play in both local and regional economies.
Audience participation is encouraged, making this event not just a lecture but an interactive dialogue. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m., allowing attendees to mingle over pizza before the event begins. While masks are encouraged for protection against COVID-19, they will be available on-site for those who need them.
This event is co-sponsored by the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, an organization that has been a steadfast defender of the Oregon coast for over 50 years. Known for their CoastWatch volunteer program, Oregon Shores also focuses on land use planning, water quality, shoreline management, and marine conservation.
For those unable to attend in person, a Zoom link will be available. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP via the NCCWP website at www.healthywatershed.org.
