Who: Friends of Haystack Rock
What: 20th Anniversary Celebration
When: November 1st– November 3rd
Where: Cannon Beach Art Gallery, Cannon Beach History Museum, & Coaster Theatre Playhouse
We invite everyone to join in our 3-day celebrations. We want to thank the Cannon Beach Gallery, Cannon Beach History Museum and the Coaster Theatre Playhouse for their partnership in hosting these events in celebration of the Friends of Haystack Rock 20th anniversary.
On November 1st the Cannon Beach Gallery will host the opening reception for the Annual “Miniature Show” from 4:30 to 6:30pm. The theme for this year is “About Town,” focusing on capturing the essence of Cannon Beach and its surrounding area. Artists were encouraged to create pieces that celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of this coastal town, its natural landscapes, haystack rock, tufted puffins, seabirds, shorebirds, and tidepools. This year’s Miniature show also serves as a fundraiser for FOHR.
The Cannon Beach History Museum will open a Friends of Haystack Rock exhibit on November 2nd to celebrate our past accomplishments and our future goals. We will be hosting a reception including a silent auction and drawings from 11 am to 4 pm at the museum. Auction and drawing items have been generously provided by the community, and include hotel stays, wine, dinner, fun items for both adults and children, and beautiful art pieces. The exhibit will run until late summer 2025.
Our celebrations end on November 3rd with an original play about Haystack Rock, written by Deanna Duplechain, and performed by children, at the Coaster Theatre Playhouse. We will start the activities at 2 pm, with the one-hour performance beginning at 3pm.
Friends of Haystack Rock (FOHR), a nonprofit in Cannon Beach, will be celebrating our 20th anniversary during the Stormy Weather Arts festival November 1st thru the 3rd, 2024. FOHR started with a group of concerned citizens who wanted to preserve and protect the life at Haystack rock, including the tidepools, as well as the sea and shore birds. Neal and Karen Maine were instrumental in establishing the Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) which was formed as a City of Cannon Beach sponsored program. As this program grew it became apparent that a non-profit should be established to assist in raising resources to supplement HRAP. From this concern, the Friends of Haystack Rock was established in 2004. Today, FOHR is recognized as a Wildlife Refuge Friends organization, in partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, since Haystack Rock is part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. The focus of FOHR now includes Haystack Rock, the health of the surrounding ecosystem, and at-risk species such as Tufted Puffins. Looking back on the last 20 years we celebrate the work, the impact, and the people that made it happen. We owe much to the visionaries and partners in this work including donors, the City of Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock Awareness Program, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and many Friends board members and volunteers. The work started long ago is as important and impactful today as it was when it began. For more information go to www.friendsofhaystackrock.org
