Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS has some exciting and educational community events underway for October and November!
Join us for some coastal fun this fall. On our events calendar this October and November, WEBS is offering the popular two-part photography series: Photography on the Bay. For both Part 1 and Part II of this series, WEBS is pleased to have talented and knowledgeable instructors who will help you to achieve your next best photograph. WEBS is also excited to present the Native American Basket Weaving workshop led by Brian Krehbiel of the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde and Lifeways of the Tillamook, a fascinating presentation by tribal tradition keeper, Stephanie Craig (Wood).

Photography on the Bay – Part 1: Exploring Photographic Composition Sunday, October 15 – Time: 10 am – 1 pm

Join Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS during a FREE course for emerging landscape and nature photographers.
Composition is how we arrange visual elements to communicate our ideas about the subject and to engage the viewer. In this class, we will explore the basics of photography composition, most of which are applicable to drawing and painting as well. We will give examples illustrating standard “rules of thumb”, including the first rule: “There are no rules”! This event includes the main workshop providing tips on landscape photography and composition plus an optional field excursion.
Netarts Bay WEBS is pleased to have Michael Krall as the presenter for this workshop. Michael
is an avid amateur photographer and birder and has been photographing seriously for over 50 years, he has taught prior photography courses as well. His works were recently featured at the Hoffman Gallery in Manzanita. Some of Michael’s photographs can be viewed, among other
places, on the www.tillamookbirder website, which he webmasters. Currently, Michael is a retired family physician who divides his time between Netarts and Portland.

Photography on the Bay – Part II: Enhance Your Art! Sunday, November 12 – 10 am – 12 pm

Do you love to capture the beauty of Netarts and the surrounding area in photos? Searching for tips on how to process and enhance your work? Professional photographer, scientist, and WEBS volunteer, Jim Young, will lead this session on post-processing and photography enhancement.
Participants will learn tips for post-processing and enhancement, discuss various programs available, and leave with the knowledge of what they can do to improve their photos.
Participants who are open to having their work displayed and receiving positive feedback and tips for enhancement are encouraged to submit photos for review during the workshop. Cell phone photos are not ideal. All photos should be in jpg format.

Native American Basket Weaving – Saturday, October 28th – 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Participants will be introduced to the art of basket making during this great workshop led by Brian Krehbiel of the Confederated Tribes of the Grande Ronde.
Brian has 15+ years as a tribal educator. Although Brian is an enrolled member of Grand Ronde, his tribal lineage descends from Nipissing band of Ojibway, Chinook, Luckiamute Kalapuya, Umpqua, Iroquois, Shasta, Tillamook, Takilma, Mary’s River Kalapuya, German, Irish and Spanish. Brian will give a short presentation on gathering native vegetation and materials, processing, and basket making, along with how he learned to make baskets. After the introduction, he will guide 15 people in making a small basket from start to finish using native plants that he and others will provide.

Lifeways of the Tillamook

The Netarts area is composed of the land and waters of the Tillamook and has been a vital part of the lives of people for centuries. Join Netarts Bay WEBS in welcoming Stephanie Craig (Wood). Stephanie is a “tradition keeper” and will share her experiences as a basket maker and ethnobotanist. Participants will have the opportunity to explore tribal lifeways and culture, the history of tribal communities, and learn about traditional foods, medicines, utilitarian plants, and more.

There is no cost to attend WEBS programs. Tax-exempt donations to Netarts Bay WEBS to enable programs like these are encouraged, but not required.
These events are part of the Explore Nature series of hikes, walks, paddles, and outdoor adventures. Explore Nature events are hosted by a consortium of volunteer community and non-profit organizations, and are meaningful nature-based experiences that highlight the unique beauty of Tillamook County and the work being done to preserve and conserve the area’s natural resources and natural resource-based economy.
