Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS is presenting three fun and educational events in the month of November. We are excited to bring back two events to our community: the very popular Lifeways of the Tillamook and Native American Basket Making. As a third event, WEBS is presenting for the first time a Native American Marketplace! For more details of each event, check out the following list.
Lifeways of the Tillamook – Saturday, November 2, 10am – Noon at the Tillamook Pioneer Museum
The Netarts area is composed of the land and waters of the Tillamook and has been a vital part of the lives of people for centuries. Join Netarts Bay WEBS in welcoming Stephanie Craig of Kalapuya Weaving and Consulting. Stephanie is a tradition keeper and will share her experiences as a basket maker and ethnobotanist. Additionally, she will present about tribal lifeways and culture, the history of tribal communities, and learn about traditional foods, medicines, utilitarian plants, and more.
Native American Marketplace – Sat., November 9, 10am – 4pm at the Netarts Community Club
Join the Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS at the Netarts Community Club to welcome multiple vendors and artists during our first annual Native American Marketplace. Learn about and purchase trade goods from Native American-run businesses and producers. Products may include fry bread, smoked fish, beadwork, purses, woven baskets, and flint knapping. No registration required.
Native American Basket Making – Sat., November 16th, 10am – 2pm at the Netarts Community Club
Participants will be introduced to the art of basket making during this great workshop led by Brian Krehbiel of Agency Creek Expressions. Brian has 15+ years of experience as a tribal educator. Brian will give a short presentation on gathering native vegetation and materials, processing, and basket making, along with how he learned to make baskets. After the introduction, he will guide 15 people in making a small basket from start to finish using native plants that he and others will provide. Although Brian is an enrolled member of Grand Ronde, his tribal lineage descends from Nipissing band of Ojibway, Chinook, Luckiamute Kalapuya, Umpqua, Iroquois, Shasta, Tillamook, Takilma, Mary’s River Kalapuya, German, Irish and Spanish.
Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS is grateful to our guest presenters and Marketplace vendors who are generously sharing their knowledge, skills, expertise, and handmade products with our community through this trio of events.
