Wheeler, OR – For their dedication to creatively reducing waste in Tillamook County, Heart of Cartm organization accepted an award from U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley during his in-person town hall at Tillamook High School last Saturday, January 14, 2023. Senator Merkley presented Jessi Just, Heart of Cartm executive director with a “recycled” flag – a very special flag that had flown over the US Capitol.
Heart of Cartm is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides critical repair services and creative reuse resources in downtown Wheeler. Since opening the current location in August 2021, the organization has hosted 10 creative reuse classes, 11 Repair Cafes and 1 weekend long marine debris transformation retreat in their workshop. The popular Repair Cafe is a monthly event in which volunteer fixers diagnose and repair common household items for the community, such as: vacuums, lamps, small appliances, jewelry and clothing.
Heart of Cartm promotes and implements zero waste principles for Tillamook County by supporting found object artists, community collaboration and sustainable living. Their annual Trash Bash Art Festival brings awareness to environmental issues while highlighting all the fun and incredible ways
one can use trash as a resource.
“We love our Resourcerers!” exclaims Jessi Just, Executive Director. “The varied skills on our volunteer team is astounding. From expert sewing to photography, it’s the collaboration and imagination in our community that turns trash to treasure.”
