North Coast Squid
The Hoffman Gallery will show the work of the contributing visual artists in the 2023 edition of The North Coast Squid during the month of November.
The North Coast Squid: A Journal of Local Writing & Art was first published in 2012 in collaboration with The North Coast Citizen and is now published by the Hoffman Writing Program. This literary magazine
offers local writers and artists—as well as those who have a strong connection to the north Oregon coast—a way to share their work in print.

Native American Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Lifeways of Northwestern Oregon
In celebration of National Native American Heritage Month (November 2023), we are very fortunate to have Stephanie Craig join us at the Hoffman Center.
Stephanie Craig is a seventh-generation traditional basket weaver and is a Chinook, Kalapuya, Rogue River, Umpqua, and enrolled Grand Ronde Tribal member. She will be sharing traditional local and regional ecological knowledge, lifeways, and basket weaving. The presentation will include a rich display of food, medicine, utilitarian plant samples, family belongings, and tools.
Stephanie received a Bachelor of Arts degree in cultural anthropology, with an emphasis on Northwest Native American cultures. She fulfilled her college language requirement with her Native American language, Chinuk Wawa. Stephanie also holds an interdisciplinary Master of Arts degree in cultural anthropology (Western Oregon Native American cultures), cultural museum studies (collections, interpretation, and education), and folklore (oral histories).
Stephanie has completed internships at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American Indian Archives Department, the University of Oregon’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History, Tamástslikt Cultural Institute for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, as well as with many traditional basket weavers.
