‘Tis the season for road construction ….
Second weekend: Noon Friday, July 7 to 5 a.m. Monday, July 10
PORTLAND – Drivers should prepare for several closures of westbound Interstate 84 in East Portland this summer as crews repave and repair the highway.
The first weekend closure starts at noon Friday, June 23, through 5 a.m., Monday, June 26, when all lanes of I-84 west at the I-205 interchange will close for bridge deck and bridge joint repair. Bridge joints are made of steel and concrete and connect segments of bridges. Newly replaced and repaired bridge joints extend the life of the freeway and last 20-30 years.
The second weekend closure will continue this work at the same location from noon Friday, on July 7, through 5 a.m., Monday, July 10.
Drivers heading west on I-84 will be detoured to I-205 southbound where they can follow signs to I-84 westbound (Exit 21B). The exit to I-205 north is open during the weekend closures.
On-ramps leading to the closure area will be closed over the same weekends:
- I-84 westbound on-ramp at NE 102nd Avenue (closed at night only).
- I-84 westbound on-ramp at NE 181st Avenue.
- I-84 westbound on-ramp at Fairview Parkway.
Travelers should plan for delays and consider taking an alternate route or form of transportation during the weekend closures.

Additional traffic impacts
In addition to the weekend closures, travelers should also expect nighttime traffic impacts this summer:
- Nighttime full closures of I-84 east at I-205 for several nights.
- Several nighttime full closures of the following ramps to/from I-205, including the I-205:
- I-205 north ramps to I-84 east.
- I-205 south ramps to I-84 east.
- Nighttime lane and ramp closures in both directions of I-84 between I-205 and Marine Drive in Troutdale.
- Periodic lane closures on NE 238th Drive to reconfigure the northbound signal with two dedicated left-turn lanes onto I-84 west.
As with all construction, the schedule is subject to change. The latest information including detour maps will be posted on and on the project website. Check TripCheck.com for real-time traffic information.

About the project
About 80,000 travelers use this corridor daily. Smooth highway surfaces improve safety reducing risks caused by rutting, especially during rain. The high volume of traffic combined with use of studded tires has deteriorated the roadway since it was last repaved in 2010. Resurfacing bridges and replacing bridge joints increases the safety and life of the structures.
In 2023, we are repaving and resurfacing about 6 miles of I-84 from Interstate 205 to 169th Avenue and from just east of 201st Avenue to Marine Drive (Exit 17). The work runs through Portland, Gresham, Fairview, Wood Village and Troutdale.
The project will improve the safety and lifespan of I-84 by:
- Resurfacing two sections of I-84 with new asphalt or removing ruts in concrete.
- Repaving Exit 10 eastbound on- and off-ramps at NE 122nd
- Repaving sections of the I-205 interchange.
- Resurfacing some bridges.
- Repairing or replacing bridge joints on several structures along I-84.
- Constructing new accessible sidewalk curb ramps at the NE 122nd Avenue on-ramp to I-84 east. (This includes permanently closing a crosswalk at the intersection.)
- Reconfiguring the northbound signal at NE 238th Drive with two dedicated left-turn lanes onto I-84 west.
Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2023.

Gorge Work
This I-84 Paving and Resurfacing project is one project in a bundle of projects underway or planned on Interstate 84 between Interstate 205 in Portland and Hood River, and on the Historic Columbia River Highway between Troutdale and Hood River. Each project brings benefits to residents, businesses and visitors by increasing safety, extending the lifespan of the highways or completing a gap in walking and biking infrastructure. More information about all of the projects is available at i84GorgeConstruction.org.
