I was lucky enough to chaperone my 6th grader’s Alternative Energy field trip this month to Cape Lookout State Park hosted by Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed, Estuary, Beach and Sea (WEBS). What a wonderful event! On this annual field trip, our sixth graders learned about wind, wave, and solar energy. They built mini wind turbines, measured wind speed, and powered mini cars using solar panels while exploring our local environment.
For 20 years, WEBS has partnered with Tillamook schools to provide students with “the opportunity to discover the natural world by collecting real world data.” I am so grateful that our students have this local opportunity! Thank you to Christine Smith (WEBS Executive Director) and Amy Schmid (Natural Resources Coordinator, Tillamook School District) for your collaboration and hard work putting this together. And thank you to the lovely staff and volunteers who made this field trip a success. Our community is better because of you! With programs like this, we are growing the next generation of scientific thinkers.
