Local author Butch Freedman will read from his latest book, a collection of short stories, at a launch party on November 10, 3 pm at the Cape Meares Community Center, 5690 4th Street in Cape Meares. Books will be offered for sale at the event.
“Old Dogs and other stories” (Avi Press, 243 pages) includes 16 short stories. The topics are contemporary and wide-ranging, touching on issues of masculinity in a changing world, relationships, fatherhood, sexuality, death, dogs (of course), surfing, therapy, the mundanity of everyday life, escape, addiction, and starting over – and over.
Despite the occasional grimness and grittiness, the stories are often lightened with humor and wit. The recurring narrator is able to laugh at himself and at the absurd situations he finds himself in. Always, in the end, there is hope.
Freedman lives in Cape Meares and is a long-time writer and teacher. He has published two previous books: “Fancypants: an autobiographical novel” and “Beach Bum: a life in pieces.” He has also published many short stories, essays, and memoir pieces. One of his short stories was nominated for the Pushcart Prize in fiction.
