Bayocean, a lovely town located near Cape Meares, was once a thriving community in the early 20th century. Bordered by the ocean and Tillamook Bay, it was home to a hotel, natatorium, general store, bowling alley and small railroad; even the streets had sidewalks.
It was not to last.
A jetty built by the Army Corps of Engineers, intended to expand access for the logging industry, altered Bayocean’s seaward currents. Day after day, sand was being washed away from the shoreline, undermining foundations of every building.
Author Jerry Sutherland spent 9 years researching the history and impact of Bayocean in his new book, Bayocean, Atlantis of the Pacific. He’ll be presenting this fascinating story on January 20, 3:30 pm at North County Recreation District. Presented by Nehalem Valley Historical Society. $10 at the door supports NVHS educational programs.
