Nehalem Valley Historical Society is pleased to present the north coast premiere of “Homestead – the Life and Times of Mary Gerritse.” This 58-minute documentary features the story of the north Oregon coast’s first female mail carrier, Mary Gerritse. The story is based on her experiences as a homesteader, as written in Mary’s personal journal. Learn about her arrival in the Nehalem Valley at age 12 and her challenges packing the mail by horseback over Neahkahnie Mountain to north county post offices.
Mary Gerritse’s stories, along with numerous archival images and documents, give a dramatic sense of life on one of Oregon’s last frontiers. Historian Mark Beach and Liz Cole developed this program for live performance in 2018 and collaborated with filmmaker Carl Vandervoort to bring it to the screen. After a two year delay, this screening is the Audience Premiere.
Join historian Mark Beach, actor Liz Cole and filmmaker Carl Vandervoort on April 8 at 3:30pm at North County Recreation District (36155 9th St, Nehalem). Admission is $10, which helps support Nehalem Valley Historical Society educational programs.
