Welcome, Tillamook County Pioneer readers, to our new food series where we embark on a culinary journey through San Francisco, a city known for its diverse food culture and high-end dining experiences. Why? Because I love food, but many Tillamook locals like to live vicariously (I see you). In this series, we’ll explore a variety of eateries, from food trucks to Michelin-starred restaurants, to give you a taste of what the other City by the Bay has to offer.
San Francisco Star Rating: ⭐⭐☆ (2 out of 3)
Waterbar, located on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, is not just a restaurant; it’s an experience. With its ethically sourced ingredients, stunning venue, and panoramic views of the Bay Bridge, it offers a dining experience that is both luxurious and conscientious.
The menu is a celebration of local produce and high-quality ingredients. The oysters, locally grown, serve as a briny appetizer that sets the tone for the meal. The grilled broccoli rabe is a revelation, its bitterness perfectly balanced by mushroom marscapone, pepitas, and a drizzle of honey. The steak, butchered locally, is cooked to a perfect rare and accompanied by roasted corn and corn puree. It’s so generous that you’ll likely take some home, extending the experience into your week. For those with a penchant for seafood, the seafood boil is a must-try, particularly the shrimp.
The wine list is extensive, but the Scattered Peaks Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 stands out for its robust flavor that complements the meal. Sparkling water is available for those who prefer a non-alcoholic option. Additionally, the bar is a social hub where you might even get a free drink from a friendly patron, as I did.
The venue itself is a feast for the eyes, with meticulous attention to detail. Whether you have a reservation or are a walk-in guest, the staff is knowledgeable and accommodating. The crowd is diverse, consisting mainly of young women and couples on dates, all looking to enjoy a high-quality meal in a beautiful setting.
The experience comes at a premium; the total cost was around $180, inclusive of tax and tip. However, the quality of the food, the service, and the ambiance make it worth every penny. Parking is not offered by the restaurant, but nearby options are available. Last-minute reservations are accepted, and a bar area is available for walk-ins. A 6% charge is added for San Francisco Employer Mandates, and a 20% gratuity is added for parties of 6 or more. The restaurant also adheres to California food safety laws.
While Waterbar is exceptional in many categories, it earns a 2 out of 3 stars in our San Francisco Star Rating. The steak, although good and butchered locally, didn’t quite justify its high price tag, especially when compared to other high-end steakhouses where similar quality can be had for less.
