Julia Maxine (Lundberg) Scovell was born February 17, 1932 to Elmer and Mable (Wilson) Lundberg joining her brother Elmer and sister Florence. She was known as Maxine her entire life. She peacefully passed away October 23, 2023 with family by her side. Maxine attended Nehalem Grade School and Nehalem Union High School. She lived most of her life in Tillamook County. Living at Suzanne Elise Assisted Living in Seaside, Oregon from February 2021 until October 23, 2023.
Maxine married Vern Scovell in 1949. They had two children, Lindy and Karen. She worked various jobs and is remembered for her work at the Nehalem Grade School cafeteria. After divorcing, Maxine worked at the Tillamook County court house.
Maxine enjoyed league bowling in Rockaway and later at Randy’s Bowling alley in Bayside Gardens, Oregon (the bowling alley building is now The Lighthouse Restaurant).
Maxine was an avid golfer, earning three “Hole in One” trophies. Playing golf at the original Neah-Kah-Nie golf course, she made her first hole in one. She traveled to play at many golf courses but felt most at home playing golf with friends at Alderbrook golf course at Idaville, Oregon.
Maxine enjoyed traveling. Her most memorable trips were to Egypt, cruising the Panama Canal and touring the USA with her daughter. She liked growing flowers, winning several awards at the county fair.
Maxine loved being a mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Family and friends received many knitted and crocheted gifts. Her grandchildren wore beautiful hand knitted sweaters and cuddled with toasty warm afghans. She had a very soft heart for dogs and many dogs were family members throughout her life.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Mable Lundberg, her brother Elmer Lundberg and long-time partner Edward Clarke. She is survived by her sister Florence Chase, son Lindy (Irene) Scovell, daughter Karen (David) DeVault, four grandchildren Heather (Alan) Thompson, Clint (Becky) Scovell, Chad DeVault, Amy Smith (fiancé Tim Reed) and nine great-grandchildren Trevor DeVault, Cody DeVault, Parker Scovell, Keira Thompson, Peyton Scovell, Max Scovell, Milo Smith and Mina Smith.
A graveside service will be held at the Bayside Garden’s cemetery November 18, 2023 at 11am with a reception to follow immediately after the service at Calvary Bible Church fellowship hall, Manzanita, OR.
