Last week, over 70 land managers, tourism professionals, businesses, nonprofits, chambers of commerce, local government leaders, and community members gathered in Seaside to strategize the future of tourism management on the North Coast.
As the most-visited region of the Oregon Coast—especially during the summer months—this area faces unique challenges. How do we lessen the impact of high visitation on infrastructure and natural resources? How can we reduce traffic congestion? And what steps can we take to make travel more sustainable over time? These were just some of the big questions at the heart of this important discussion.
Tourism is a primary economic driver for our coastal communities, and everyone has a stake in its future. This summit, hosted by North Coast Tourism Management, was designed to ensure that local voices shape the group’s priorities and long-term planning efforts.
Throughout the day, panelists shared insights on transportation, accessibility, stewardship, and outdoor recreation—framing both current challenges and aspirations for the next fifteen years.
Panelists included:
- Improving and Diversifying Transportation Options:
- Kathy Kleczek, Dept. of Land Conservation and Development
- Carolyn Crisp, R2 Oregon Department of Transportation
- Enhancing Outdoor Recreation Experiences:
- Carolyn Fitchett, Salmonberry Trail
- Sierra Spinler, Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce
- Encouraging Stewardship Practices:
- Lynnee Jacks, Oregon Coast Visitors Association
- Lisa Habecker, Friends of Haystack Rock
- Improving Accessibility:
- Dan Haag, Tillamook Coast Visitors Association
- Caroline Wuebben, Columbia Maritime Museum
Following the presentations, attendees divided into working groups to map out actionable goals that will help guide the region’s approach to sustainable tourism.
