Alice’s Restaurant has sat nestled quietly in the redwoods of Woodside California for generations. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner most days, the American menu both comforts weary travelers and families alike.
The setup is unique, you order and pay (at least on days it’s not raining) in the parking lot. This means the dining areas themselves are very peaceful with most of the chaos normally associated with a restaurant focused in one spot away from most patrons. Like almost all classic diners you get a number after you order, and the friendly staff will bring your order to your table.
Alice’s is a bit of a California anomaly, in that you can almost always get a good meal at a reasonable price. Situated at the juncture of scenic country roads, it’s a favorite haunt for sports car aficionados, particularly on weekends when the parking lot transforms into a veritable exhibition of high-speed luxury. Despite its popularity, Alice’s always seems to have a table ready, be it indoors or out, making it an idyllic year-round destination. And you can get breakfast, lunch, or dinner for under $30 with tax and tip if you order simply.
The food is a harmonious blend of simplicity and excellence. The steak and eggs are cooked to perfection (although the sunny side egg is difficult and I’ve never had one cooked perfectly, this came close, with almost all the white cooked evenly through with no rubberiness to the whites), while the slow-roasted ribs, tender and succulent, effortlessly slide off the bone. Each dish is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality, served in generous portions at prices that delight as much as the food itself.
Named after Alice Taylor, who acquired the establishment in the 1960s, the restaurant has soared in popularity over the years. Its growth in esteem is not just due to the fortuitous sharing of its name with a famous, unrelated song, but also because of its unwavering consistency and homey feel. Alice’s is a family-friendly venue, ranking high among the finest diners along the West Coast.
As a frequent diner who has embarked on a culinary exploration of the West Coast, I find Alice’s to be particularly inviting. The warm ambience is enhanced by outdoor heaters, creating a cozy atmosphere that complements the dining experience. The ‘pay first’ policy is a thoughtful touch, removing any rush from the meal and ensuring prompt service.
For those visiting, I highly recommend the Norton Burger. The fusion of blue cheese and bacon in this burger creates a flavor profile that is unparalleled – a must-try for both connoisseurs and casual diners alike. As someone who has transitioned from veganism to embracing a carnivorous diet, my journey has been enriched by the diverse and delectable offerings at Alice’s.
Alice’s is highly recommended. Worth a stop or three.
3 out of 3 stars because I like it, I’d give it another star just for fun because these ratings don’t really matter do they.
