“It’s been a long journey,” Dr. Paul Jarrell, President of Tillamook Bay Community College, told the large audience assembled to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new TBCC Health Education Building. “When we look at this building, it is a multi-purpose building to benefit Tillamook.”
The new building will encompass more than 28,000 square feet. The process was started by Dr. Ross Tomlin, president of TBCC for seven years, and is moving to the construction phase under current president Jarrell.
Designed by Opsis Architecture, the building features input from TBCC faculty and staff, and the community. Construction will be managed by the Wenaha Group.
“We started the nursing program (this last) winter term,” Jarrell told the group. “We will be turning out nurses for the community in about a year.”
Dr. Ross Tomlin reviewed the process of development starting with a brainstorming session of TBCC faculty and staff. After that, there was a discussion about finding grants and they were advised to approach the voters of Tillamook County for a $14.8 million bond. It passed the first time, which is a strong vote of confidence from Tillamook County voters. Another 8 million came from the Oregon Legislature, and a bond premium provided another $1.4 million. There is $23.8 million available for the project.
Jarrell thanked all of the supporters and contributors to the project. He singled out Eric Swanson, president of the Tillamook Adventist Hospital for his support, including opportunities for placing students, donation of an ambulance, and other contributions. Gail Nelson, CEO of the Nehalem Bay Health Center & Pharmacy, was also given special thanks for job placements for students and other assistance.
The new building will allow the college to develop and expand additional classes and programs. “TBCC will be turned into a campus,” Jarrel explained. “Classes are slated to begin in the new Health Education Building in the fall of 2025.
