Tillamook County is buzzing with excitement as the Tillamook Bay Community College Foundation gears up for its second North Coast Throwdown Cornhole tournament. This fun-filled event, scheduled for January 27th at the fairgrounds, promises to be a day of friendly competition and community engagement, all in support of a noble cause.
The Tillamook Bay Community College Foundation, led by the Executive Director of Advancement, has been a pillar of support for the college through philanthropic efforts. The foundation plays a crucial role in raising funds for various college needs, including student scholarships, equipment, and facilities. In the last fiscal year alone, the foundation brought in over $510,000, with a significant portion allocated to student scholarships and the Creative Career Scholarship program.
The foundation’s board of directors, including notable members like Michael Wise (President), Chuck Bridge (Vice President), and Marilyn Fegley (Treasurer), meet quarterly to oversee these efforts.
This year’s North Coast Throwdown Cornhole tournament is not just a fundraiser but a celebration of community spirit and talent. The tournament, which was initially planned for April 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic, had its successful inaugural event in January 2023. The foundation is eager to replicate that success this year.
Teams of various skill levels are invited to participate in the tournament, which features a double-elimination format ensuring that everyone gets a fair chance to compete. The entry fee is $50 per team, including a swag bag for players. The event is not just for seasoned players but also welcomes those who enjoy a casual game at backyard barbecues.
The funds raised from the event are directed towards the Creative Career Scholarship program. This program provides full tuition scholarships to adults, particularly those who have been in the workforce for five years or more, looking to advance or change their careers. This initiative is especially impactful for nontraditional students who balance work and family responsibilities.
Participants can register for the tournament through the college’s Facebook page, Eventbrite, or the Scoring app. The event has attracted a diverse group of participants, from local cornhole league members to casual players, all united by their desire to support the scholarship program.
The deadline for team registration is January 22nd, with the event capable of hosting up to 48 teams. The tournament will be held in the TillaSkate portion of the fairgrounds, promising a lively atmosphere with music, food, and a kids’ corner. The tournament format is designed to increase in challenge as players advance, ensuring an engaging experience for both participants and spectators.
The foundation extends a warm invitation to all who wish to join, whether as participants or spectators. Volunteers are also welcome, especially those who can assist with team registrations. The event, running from 11 am to 5 pm, is not just an opportunity for fun and competition but a chance to make a significant contribution to the scholarship program, which greatly benefits the local community.
A heartfelt thanks goes to the sponsors, including CommBank, Grocery Outlet, Greggs Marine Service, Barbara Lasky, LLC, Viridian Architecture, City Sanitary Service, Les Schwab, Pelican Brewing, and all of our gracious donors. Their support is instrumental in the success of the event and the ongoing efforts of the foundation.
The Foundation is a shining example of community involvement and generosity. This upcoming event not only showcases the foundation’s commitment to education and development but also reflects the strong community spirit prevalent in Tillamook County.
