The Tillamook County Library Foundation (TCLF) was established in 1989. As part of the Tillamook County Pioneer’s ongoing podcast series “Get to Know Your Local Nonprofit,” I had the opportunity to sit down with key members of the Tillamook County Library Foundation (TCLF). In this engaging conversation, Ruth LaFrance, the current President of the Foundation, along with Sally Underwood, a dedicated Foundation member, and Don Allgeier, the Library Director and a Foundation member, shared invaluable insights into the TCLF’s history, mission, and impactful community initiatives. The Foundation’s primary mission is to manage an endowment that supports the library’s specific needs, separate from its operational budget.
“We started with an initial endowment deposit of $100,” said LaFrance of their humble beginnings.
Increased outreach led to a major donation of $36,000 in 1994 to an endowment of over $300,000 at present. Funds were raised for the construction of the main library building through selling merchandise, hosting events, and securing grants, such as the Meyer Memorial Trust grant.
Allgeier pointed out that the Foundation’s support is not limited to infrastructure, it also extends to library programming and special projects, including the creation of a park next to the main library. The TCLF is also committed to expanding its support to include enhancing library services in less served areas, improving educational resources for students, and introducing advanced adult programming with notable authors and speakers.
Volunteer management is a critical aspect of TCLF’s operations. The Foundation runs a bookstore staffed by volunteers, with the proceeds supporting library programs and administrative costs. Volunteer involvement has faced challenges, especially after the pandemic, but remains a key component of TCLF’s strategy. The Foundation thrives on the passion and dedication of volunteers. By lending your time and skills, you become an integral part of a team that shapes the future of library services in Tillamook County. From managing the Foundation’s bookstore to assisting in various initiatives, your contributions are invaluable.
Your financial support fuels the Foundation’s ability to enhance library programs, support special projects, and extend its reach to underserved communities. Every donation, big or small, contributes to the enduring impact of the library in the community.
