The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office, and in particular, Marine Deputy Dennis Greiner, had a busy weekend. It all began for Deputy Greiner on Friday, November 10th when he launched a TCSO patrol boat at Garibaldi Marina to recover a recreational boat that had become disabled the day before, and had been lodged on rocks along the shore across from the Three Graces rocks in Tillamook Bay. No injuries were reported.
Deputy Greiner decided to remove the boat before it became a navigational hazard for other boaters. With the assistance of Garibaldi Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Blake Paulsen and Firefighter Brad Marugg, the boat was floated and towed back to the Marina for removal.
Later Friday evening, Deputy Greiner, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and Netarts-Oceanside Fire Rescue were dispatched to rescue four adult clammers who had gotten stuck on a sand bar by the incoming tide on Netarts Bay. Deputy Greiner jumped on a USCG skiff with BM3 Austin Brink and EM3 Aiden Hayes. Netarts-Oceanside Fire launched their rescue personal watercraft and a USCG helicopter also responded. When the four people were located, the water was up to their necks.
They were loaded into the skiff and brought to two awaiting Tillamook Ambulances and transported to Tillamook Hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
On Saturday, November 11th, Deputy Greiner received a call for another disabled boat along pilings on Tillamook Bay near the Port Office. Deputy Greiner was covering a patrol shift at the time, but was still able to respond to the area. Once he arrived, he arranged for a good samaritan in a passing boat to tow the disabled boat to the ramp. No injuries were reported.
On Sunday, November 12th, TCSO, Oregon State Police (OSP), Netarts-Oceanside Fire Rescue, TCSO SAR and a USCG helicopter responded to the Cape Lookout Trailhead area for a report of a possible suicidal person. As this location is within the boundaries of Cape Lookout State Park, OSP is the lead investigation agency. The USCG Helicopter crew located deceased adult male at the base of the southern side of Cape Lookout from an apparent suicide.
Deputies Dennis Greiner, Ben Berger, Sam Cummings, OSP Trooper Jace Huseby, USFS Forest Protection Officer Travis Sisco, and Netarts Fire Rescue and TCSO SAR personnel assisted in the body recovery, which proved extremely difficult due to weather conditions and terrain. Deputies Scott Griffith and Billy Cloud coordinated the SAR response. As always, Tillamook 911 Dispatchers were involved and assisted with each of these incidents. We are grateful for all of our partner public safety agencies that respond with TCSO to calls like this every day. Also, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased found at Cape Lookout.
