Warming Centers: In response to the dangerous weather conditions for people without shelter, and for people without power, a number of warming center options are available Thursday night in Tillamook County:
CARE, Inc. in Tillamook will have a warming center open at the First Christian Church, 2203 4th St, from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. The lobby of the CARE office, at 2310 First St., suite 2 in Tillamook, will also be open Friday at 8 a.m. for daytime warming.
Manzanita Calvary Bible Church, 560 Laneda Avenue in Manzanita will be open at 4:30 p.m.
North County Recreation District (NCRD), 36155 9th Street in Nehalem will be open at 5 p.m.
City of Wheeler Emergency Shelter at Wheeler City Hall, 775 Nehalem Blvd. in Wheeler will be open at 3 p.m.
Weather: The National Weather Service (NWS) has predicted extreme cold temperatures tonight and Friday night, in the low 20s both nights. Any moisture on roadways, sidewalks, parking lots, etc. will freeze overnight Thursday and Friday, posing significant driving risks, falling risks, potential power outages and road closures due to fallen trees. Temperatures may climb to the 40s Friday and Saturday during the day. At this time minimal additional moisture is predicted for the coast, while snow may continue to accumulate in the coast range. Please see the NWS Portland Briefing attached. Citizens are encouraged to stay home Friday morning to avoid driving in icy conditions, and to prepare for possible power outages.
Roads Update: Cape Lookout Road will remain closed Thursday night from Sandlake Road to the entrance of Cape Lookout State Park. A Tillamook County roads crew was working in the area clearing fallen trees when the winds picked up and more trees were actively falling. The crew evacuated for safety.
Highway 101 at Cascade Head is closed from MP 96-105. Use tripcheck.com to check state highway conditions.
Closures: Tillamook County offices will be closed Friday, Feb. 24 for the safety of our staff and the public, including the Tillamook County Community Health clinics. Tillamook County Circuit Court will be closed Friday, Feb. 24, and the grand jury has been cancelled.
Outages Update from Tillamook PUD: there are multiple scattered outages, primarily in South Tillamook county, due to extreme heavy snow on lines and trees coming down. PUD is posting updates as frequently as possible on the TPUD website and Facebook page.
Crews are working diligently to make repairs and restore power. They will be working through the night. They do not have estimated power restoration times. Some customers may be without power through the night. TPUD urges customers to be cautious if they are out and about. Stay far away from downed power lines. If you must go out, please use extreme caution driving by crews working on the roadways.
Thank you to our hardworking road crews, PUD crews, emergency responders and to the many volunteers who will brave the icy weather to open warming centers so that people in our community do not have to suffer in dangerous weather. Thank you.
