Tillamook County is taking The Great Oregon Shakeout drill to the next level with a county wide tsunami evacuation drill on Thursday Oct. 17th at 10:17 am. The earthquake is the tsunami warning – if you are in the tsunami zone, then evacuate. Be prepared, not scared. Participating is a great way for your family or organization to become better prepared to survive.
Tillamook County Emergency Management will be sending out a DRILL alert for a Tsunami on 10/17/24 at 10:17am. This will be an exercise NOT a real emergency, The alert will state that there has been an earthquake, and a tsunami is arriving withing 30 minutes, evacuate to high ground and then go to the nearest assemble point.
GET READY TO SHAKE OUT, THEN MOVE OUT OF THE TSUNAMI ZONE
You are invited to join thousands of fellow Oregonians participating on October 17th at 10:17 a.m. in the 2024 Great Oregon ShakeOut!
What’s involved?
First, register for the ShakeOut – ShakeOut.org/oregon Next, sign up for Tillamook County Emergency alerts
Then between now and October 17th, review your emergency preparedness
- Gobag – Do you have what you need? When disaster strikes there may be little or no time to gather the essential items you will need. Simply stock a backpack or duffel with the essential supplies you need to survive for 3 days and keep it in a convenient place to grab and go. More information – https://evcnb.org/gobags
- Evacuation route – Do you know your evacuation route? Do you know how long it will take you to WALK there? Roads will likely be impassible. What if you aren’t at home – do you know the evacuation route in other areas? For more information – https://www.oregon.gov/dogami/tsuclearinghouse/Pages/default.aspx
- Family plan – Does everyone in your family know how to contact each other if separated in a disaster? For more information – – https://evcnb.org/planning-for-emergencies
Then on October 17th, our fictional earthquake shaking starts at 10:17am. Wherever you are – Drop! Cover! Hold On
Why is “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” important to practice? You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or something falls on you. Practicing helps you be ready to react. In the Big One, strong shaking may last as long as 5 minutes.
Once shaking stops, if you live in the tsunami zone, grab your gobag and move quickly to high ground. The earthquake is your tsunami warning. In some areas, the initial tsunami waves start arriving in 10 minutes.
Some communities have special events planned. Learn about what your community is doing for the Great Oregon ShakeOut.
