In the picturesque landscapes of Oregon, trails wind through mountains, forests, and coastal areas, offering breathtaking views and a connection to nature. Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO), a non-profit organization, is at the forefront of ensuring these trails remain accessible, safe, and sustainable.
TKO believes in three core principles when it comes to trail building: good quality, affordability, and speed. They strive to deliver excellent and cost-effective trails, although they admit that working with volunteers may not always be the fastest approach. But what they may lack in speed, they make up for in dedication and community engagement.
TKO has seen significant growth, boasting upwards of 7,000 registered members. People from various walks of life can volunteer, become ambassadors, donate, and even identify new trails on TKO’s website. The enthusiasm for trails in Oregon is palpable, and TKO’s community-driven approach has fostered a sense of ownership and pride among local communities.
TKO’s trail parties are lively events where volunteers bring garden rakes, shovels, and even chainsaws (if certified). The organization is always on the lookout for cross-cut saws, those big, old lumberjack-style saws often found in sepia-toned pictures. They also offer free chainsaw and cross-cut certification classes, making trail work not just a community service but a fun and educational experience.
From maintenance and restoration to construction and advocacy, TKO’s projects are diverse. They are working on the Oregon Coast Trail, planning a trail party at Neahkahnie Mountain, rerouting the Crescent Beach Trail, and building an educational trail at Camp Westwind in Lincoln City. They also collaborate with various partners, including the Oregon Coast Visitors Association and the Cascade Head Biosphere.
Trail Ambassadors are a special part of TKO. They set up tables at trailheads, offering tips and advice to hikers. They can tailor their work to their preferences, and TKO supplies them with all the necessary equipment. The Trail Ambassador program embodies TKO’s spirit of community and education.
If you know of a trail in your region that needs some love, TKO invites you to reach out. They are committed to finding funding partners and volunteers to build and maintain trails. TKO offers resources and ways to get involved.
Trailkeepers of Oregon is more than just an organization; it’s a movement driven by passion, community, and a love for the outdoors. From volunteers clearing logs to ambassadors educating the public, TKO’s work is a testament to the power of collective effort. Whether you’re an avid hiker or someone who simply appreciates nature, TKO offers a way to give back to the trails that give so much to us.
